+Passwords: Methods for a Modern Bane
My first password was to an IBM System 38 MRP application in 1978. It was four characters long. I chose my first name. I could have picked my last name, I suppose, but the system administrator had already used that as my log-in. To the best of knowledge, no one hacked in using my credentials.

    +Microsoft kills Works
Microsoft is dumping its venerable Works application suite and replacing it with an ad-supported, free version of Office 2010, dubbed ‘Starter Edition’.

+Hadron Collider could test a hyperdrive
Rather than just creating black holes that would wipe out the earth, or at least turn it into a larger version of Detroit, the Large Hadron Collider could help develop a hyperdrive which would allow spacecraft to approach the speed of light.

    +Robot security: the next threat
Researchers at the University of Washington warn that most robotic software is not secure.

    +Micro-nuclear power coming RSN
US scientists have come up with a battery which, if it goes wrong, will probably be a bit more annoying than replacing one in an iPhone.

+Dune city designed for water wars
Although perhaps better known for its underworld gang wars, a group of students wants to build an underground city in the Nevada desert which can handle water wars.

+Social Networking helps you dodge the law
And we thought we were cynics. Honestly, we're like babes in the wood compared to this lot.

+European VCs bin majority of entrepreneurs' business plans
While widespread gloom and doom afflicts VCs in the USA, their European equivalents report that things are definitely picking up across the pond. But if you're an entrepreneur, make sure you get all of your ducks in a row because bright and shiny business plans mean nothing.

+Vendors have their head in the clouds
The widespread push by computer vendors to a "cloud" based model where data for enterprises and end users is held remotely has unfathomed legal and security consequences.

+Nvidia accuses Intel of 'improper claims,' pulls out of chipset development
Nvidia says it is "postponing" further chipset investments for Intel DMI CPUs. However, the GPU company will continue to "innovate integrated solutions" for Intel's FSB architecture.

+Congress demands FCC probe of Google Voice
A bipartisan Congressional group has asked the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to investigate Google's alleged policy of blocking high-cost calls to rural areas. According to Reuters, the legislators described Google's position as "ill conceived and unfair to our rural constituents."

+PS3 claims "top home console" slot as Wii sales decline
The PlayStation 3 is expected to claim the "top home console" slot for the month of September. According to EEDAR analyst Jesse Divnich, hardware unit sales for next-generation systems are likely to decrease by four percent over last year for the month of September - with all platforms except the Nintendo Wii and Sony PSP posting year-over-year gains.

    +Sony debuts ultra-thin Vaio X notebook
Sony has debuted its ultra-thin Vaio X notebook line. The X series - which is housed in a lightweight carbon-fiber chassis - weighs 1.6 pounds and is just over a half-inch thin.

    +Free Software Foundation goes mad
Opinion: Most folks kinda like supporting the little guy up against The Man. But when the little guy sticks his shorts over his head, puts pencils up his nose and starts saying ‘wibble’, most normal people turn away in embarrassment.
